James Justus, the proper role of ethical values in ethically driven disciplines of ecologyIn applied ecology, so Justus, nonepistemic values concerning ethical goals
seemingly permeate its teleological interest. Some authors, so reports Justus, maintain that ethical values and non-normative
facts contribute indispensably to teleological science and their contributions therefore cannot be demarcated properly.
The author thinks that this charge is overstated. In his opinion the value-laden character of this science does not challenge
the fact/value distinction or the objectivity of hypothesis testing also in applied sciences in general. In fact the ethical
value influence can be demarcated from the factual status of claims made within it, so Justus.
